cute baby pics

SEE the bumbo is not so bad!!!

Harrison tends to fall asleep with the binky half in his mouth...my favorite is when he keeps sucking while sleeping (although the binky has long since been dropped)

The real reason I don't have a job yet

I'm about to leave for my media law class and I haven't even looked at the reading assignment...BUT...I did my hair for like the second time in three months (I mean actually used a round brush and blow dryer and hair products and stuff). When you have a baby you really have to prioritize your limited free time!!

Things with which my child is not amused...

Tummy time--he starts screaming immediately--I'm weak--I pick him up after like 2 minutes..apparently he will not be holding his head up very well for awhile...
Toys--I'm trying to force this ducky on him but he's not really responding --I suppose I could do better quacking noises...
The bumbo auntie april bought for him (so ungrateful! but yet so cute!!!)

I'm hoping Harrison will grow out of this phase soon so I can keep him artificially amused and spend more time doing silly things like showering and reading about media and construction law and partnership taxation....

Boston

Last weekend we packed up the H man and went out to Boston so I could go to the annual conference of the J Reuben Clark Law Society that was held at Harvard. I've been fairly involved in this organization throughout law school and this year I'm in the national student leadership so pretty much was "required" to go--plus I jump at any chance to go to the east coast :) And was it fun??? At times...It was an adventure to say the least--here are some of the highlights (in no particular order):
1- Northwest Airlines and US Air are the bane of my existence
Our flight was switched from a NW to a US air flight due to engine trouble and I neglected to check US Air's "policies" and was unaware that they require you to check in 45 minutes prior to departure. We checked in 5 minutes past this deadline and were forced to sit in the airport for 5 hours and then arrived in Boston at 5am and I had to be at the conference by 830..... we yelled, cried, asked for a manager...neither airline really cared or would do anything for us (oh wait..I forgot, NW did give us two $25 vouchers-yee haw) it was a bit of a rough night but on the up side the baby slept through the whole flight and our hotel was really close to the airport....
2-The Root Beer chugging was not meant to be
My main responsibility as the vice chair of the Student Chapters Board was to conduct a "JRCLS cup" competition during a lunch with law students on Friday--the contest between student regions was to involve rootbeer chugging, reading the preamble to the constitution, and winning an awesome trophy I had engraved "JRCLS cup". I was ready to go Friday and my game got bumped due to a lack of time for a panel with some of the church's general counsel. Saturday I brought all the stuff back to try again during lunch and was AGAIN bumped so we could have more time for a Q&A with Judge Griffiths of the DC circuit....now I know there is a lot we as law students can learn from these people but come on--let's have some fun and chug some rootbeer!!!!
3-I have the best friends EVER
The highlight of our trip was that my awesome former roomate Alissa and great friend mike came up from DC just to see us!! Plus my friend Will and his wife Sara came down from Providence as well! And we got to hang out with our friend Katie (also in our DC ward)! PLUS Alissa brought lots of wonderful baby gifts from other roomates and DC friends. It was so nice to catch up with everyone. We went out to lunch, got delicious hot chocolate, and sat talking about babies and life and such for hours--nothing better then reconnecting and having friends willing to go to such great lengths to make that happen :) It just made me feel so blessed and loved. THANK YOU!!
3-Traveling with a baby is TOUGH
Although Harrison was generally good I have to say that traveling with a baby is just a lot more complicated. More stuff to bring--Car seat? Stroller? formula? how many diapers? how many onesies?? (I thought I brought far too many clothes and ended up using them all by the way) how am I going to keep him warm? what about his poor little ears and the change in pressure on the plane?? And the GERMS--ick!!?? Also, you can't just play around and sightsee when you constantly have to think about feeding and diapering and where and how that will happen....it's just more stressful--Although I will miss the little man when this day comes, I can't help wishing for the time he will be old enough to leave with some (hopefully) willing grandparents.
4-And PICTURES-here ya go (sorry to make you read all my ramblings first but I have to make you work for it don't I??)

On this trip I had the first chance to pack the baby into the sling I recently purchased...the 24.99 was totally worth it!! I was able to lug him through several airports and he had fun too...usually sleeping...
I love my sling!
With some Student Chapters Board kids--the fact that I slept like two hours in three days hopefully explains the state of my hair (ok you can't really tell, but it was gross)
Harvard campus and SNOW
Alissa let us borrow this awesome fleecy suit so Harrison was nice and warm despite temps in the 30s
First time on the plane--no idea what's going on outside
And the trophy that will soon be gracing my mantle...

Seattle

About two weeks ago I flew out to Seattle for the day to interview for an attorney position with the regional office of the Social Security Administration. Seattle is one of the places we think would be fun to live and when I heard about a public service career fair up there I applied for this job and decided to go out when I actually got chosen to interview. Luckily my mom helped me out with a frequent flier ticket (cuz she's AWESOME). It was fun to go and experience winter for a couple of hours. And I thought the interview went fairly well..However, today I got the tell tale letter and I didn't get the job. I can't help kicking myself because I don't think that I was passed over due to lack of qualifications or even because of the old standby "I'm not in the top 10% of my class and not on law review" but because I wasn't able to convey how much I WANTED the job....LAME....The interviewer responded to my experience and answer to the question "why do you want to work for the Social Security Administration?" with a question about whether I wanted to do litigation or policy work (since my background is in policy sort of stuff) and because I hadn't thought through the possibility of that (fairly obvious) question I wasn't able to sufficiently convince him that I DO want to do litigation if that litigation is for a federal agency in cases involving social security and disability claimaints. In this awful economy with every ASU law student stressing about what they are going to do after they graduate, I can't help wondering if this is the only chance I will get??? Needless to say, next time I interview for a more 'traditional' legal job I will be prepared to convey that I do really really really want to be a lawyer...even if working for some member of Congress might be more fun...

WOW am I out of shape

So I know people say you shouldn't work out until 6 weeks after childbirth but my doctor totally didn't tell me that :) So I've been going to the gym sporadically and halfheartedly working out on the elliptical etc...Today I decided to try running for the first time and I can hardly believe that I once ran for 2 hours without stopping!!! 20 minutes and 1.8 miles and I was about ready to collapse (but totally in a good way). I guess it's gonna take awhile before I can start running marathons huh? I'm TOTALLY up for the challenge!!! (I hope)

Because I'm too inept to figure out a slideshow

And I wanted to post some new baby pics--here is a photo montage of Harrison's first month. That's right he is one month old today!! We had our one month doctor visit on Thursday and he is now 21.5 inches long and weighed 9 pounds 6.5 ounces. His favorite activities lately include smiling once in awhile (maybe he's just gassy but we'll take it), sleeping, sucking on his binky, eating his hands, flailing around (like his mom) and making grunting noises, eating A LOT (and then spitting up a lot as well...), and generally being adorable ALL THE TIME!!
HELLO HAPPY BABY!!!

Just hanging out
LOVES THE BINKY!!!
nap time with daddy!
Contemplating the meaning of life, obviously.
LOVE this face!
Hands up!!
Do you like my green polka dot pants??
Little baby feet!!!

Such an angel when we actually get him to go to sleep!!
